Reviews

"Jon is the most amazing Maths tutor. He is professional, conscientious and excellent in every way. He breaks everything down into a simple, understandable format and goes way above and beyond sending useful links and giving advice throughout. Our son got an A in maths and his first choice uni. We highly recommend Jon - he is just the best!"

"Jonathan is a great tutor. My son had a weekly Maths lesson during GCSE and it was a very good way helping my son’s goal to get 9 in the subject. Jon did a fantastic effort with my son by using past papers and focusing on the weak points. Jon is so friendly, organised and always goes to the point. Highly appreciated! Thanks so much Jon! All the best!"

"Jonathan is a skilled, knowledgeable, pleasant and patient A level Maths tutor, who brings out the best in his pupils. His work in supporting my son through his studies saw him achieve success and go in to use his mathematical studies at university. Having been told by his college tutor that he was a weak student, which destroyed his confidence, he went on to prove him completely wrong with Jonathan's help. As a lecturer myself, I highly recommend Jonathan to anyone wanting to hone their skills to pass A level Maths."

About me

I graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2010 with a first-class degree in Mathematics. Before university, I achieved A grades in Maths, Further Maths and Physics - the highest grade possible at the time. I have tutored GCSE and A-level maths full-time ever since graduating.I've worked with students of all ages, all ability levels, and with all types of goals. It wasn't until I began tutoring that I discovered how much I enjoy working one-to-one with students, finding the best way to help them understand something they're struggling with and seeing them progress.Calmness, clarity and patience have always been my priorities when teaching, and the feedback from students and parents over the past 16 years has reinforced that belief. Of course, I know there is always room for improvement, and I hope that I become at least a little better at teaching with each passing year!

My approach to teaching

In lessons, I am to create an atmosphere in which the student I’m working with feels comfortable enough to stop and ask a question when they don’t understand something - and to not be afraid to tell me when what I’m saying makes no sense. (Which thankfully only happens occasionally!)One thing that I always try to focus on is flexibility. If students wish to cover an entire topic from start to finish then we can do so; if they would prefer to focus on just one aspect of a topic or just one type of question then we can do that too. This is one of the main advantages of one-to-one tuition versus classroom teaching.

How online lessons work

Online lessons are held through Zoom, along with a separate online whiteboard that we can both view and write on at the same time.At the beginning of each lesson, I send a link to the whiteboard. As soon as the lesson has finished, I send a PDF of the notes we've made, divided into separate pages so that they're suitable for printing.I will also send across worksheets for students to use between lessons as a way to practise everything we have covered.

What lessons involve

Lessons can be used to cover current school topics, to look ahead to a future topic, or to go back over past topics that students have found difficult.I have also created a large collection of structured worksheets and written solutions, including past-paper question sets and original questions of my own. These can be used during lessons or provided between sessions for additional practice.

Free first lesson

The first one-hour lesson is free and there is no obligation to continue. This is to give you the chance to see whether I am the right tutor for you or your child, as well as allowing me to make sure I feel confident that I can help with whatever goals you or they might have.
